I'd be tempted to get the timing checked before doing anything. if you hold 2k revs on does the engine lose the diesel type noise?

Make sure air re-circ is switched off aswell as that will cause steaming up. Also make sure the pollen filter isn't blocked, so change it if its not been done for a while
