does sound like a crank sensor problem, maybe it's loose or has a corroded plug? if the sensor gets or gives a weak signal it can often cause a problem in getting a clean rpm reading, and this gets accentuated at higher revs. pest thing to do rather than throw parts at it, would be to plug in...

depends on the engine. K4M/J (1.6 and 1.4 16v) require similar tools. 1.5 dci requires the correct pins to be used, and 1.2 16v isn't particularly a specialist job, although I've seen a LOT done incorrectly as no-one seems to know how to set a tensioner
