We all hated the Mk2 172 when it came out remember, and quite a few of us bought them in the end. Hated the new Megane too when it first appeared, but its got lots of fans now. I doubt Renault will be so daft as to introduce an ugly Clio.
Lucky. My missus had a go at one of the Renaultsport trackdays, now I cant get her out of the car when we go to a track. She even went and did one in her Megane cabby!

I think I paid about £60 a corner for 205/40/17 Toyo T1-S for my 172. Not too bad really. Set of front pads direct from Tar-ox about £55, which is expensive, but they do last well. Never wore the discs out in 33,000 miles.
Theres no way Id pay £100+ for 16" Exaltos, and I dont give a toss...
The engine comes on cam at 5k rpm, its not VVT, just the point at which the engine begins to stretch its legs a bit. Heres what you do with the boot net:
