Use some white spirit as said above, or some WD40!!.
after that give them a good wash, dry, and polish them with wheel seal. this will put a barrier on the wheel to stop brake dust adhering to the wheel. regular soap washes should keep them clean after...
I have been using them for ages and find them to be excellent.
just be VERY careful that no grit gets under the blade or it puts a mega scratch right down your bonnet! I wipe the blade now after every sweep.
i lost mine coming round a bend on a motorway off ramp. managed to recover just short of hitting the armco. damn near soiled myself! when i arrived at work, i could smell diesel off the car. i found out later that there were four crashes there that day, one of which was a workmate.:o
i was stopped recently by two motorbike cops, and quite rightly so- my plates have no fancy fonts or backgrounds, but the characters are wrongly spaced. one cop was ranting about the plates not having the dealer + postcode on them. he walked me back to his bike to show me how they SHOULD look...
why not just check the dipstick? there aint a more accurate way of checking your oil level than that. ive never trusted these dashboard gizmos anyway. any car ive had with brake wear sensors have not worked so i wont be relying on the oil level sensor either!

yes i remember that feature on watchdog. highlighting it on that show would be a very good idea. the only problem is that they must get a large number of identical complaints before they take it on board, so everyone who posted on this thread should go on the watchdog website and complain...
