There's no right or wrong answer on this.
Smaller lighter wheels means greater speed in a straight line, but wheels with a bigger foot print would provide more starting grip, so it's getting a balance that suits.

Stu, I know you love your car, and have done quite a few things to it; but honesty, it will be far cheaper and easier to sell it and buy a 172.
You can get mk1 172s for under 4k these days.
As people have said, insurance would be a nightmare, would be far easier to insure a real 172.

I sold mine last week, so I know for sure! Cups are wanted cars, don't listen to the Cup haters, there is a market for them or they wouldn't have sold from new!
£6200 is an average px price, but it's certainly worth more; 5k is a joke!
Most garages don't understand the Cup / FF thing so will not give you the full value.
