I used to get mine done at around £80 all in at Halfords. You can probably get cheaper if you go backstreet. Maybe think about getting both done if you can afford it. Mine used to last about 15k miles. I was advised it was wider wheels putting strain on bearings when cornering.

Spring.... When you press the brake pedal, theres a piston in between the two shoes that push them apart onto the wall of the drum. The spring is there to make sure when you let go of the pedal, the shoes move away from the drum. Have a look here...

On Saxo website they reckon you do it by just leaving the battery disconnected for about an hour.
