first you wanna hammer the holes down so they are slightly dented as they sit proud from factory.
if you aint got a welder then stick something on the inside of the tailgate to cover the holes, old credit card etc then fibreglass, filler, prime, paint as normal
i have to say i dont think ive ever had a non genuine part thats been 100% perfect fit. theres ALWAYS something that dont allign properly. to the average joe they are perfect, wouldnt tell the difference, to a pro some are just bloody awful
tbh in prep all you will ever need is
P80/P180/P320 (discs) for filler
P800 or P1000 or P1200 (sheets) for primer/wetflatting
P1500 or P2000 (sheets) for wetflatting laquer to mop/polish
you can get loads others, but they aint really needed tbh, id just get yourself P80/P180 and P320 velcro
you cant spray basecoat straight onto freshly sprayed primer. itll just flake off as the paints got nothing to key to.
you need to prep primer before you spray anything onto it .
only exception being wet on wet, which you aint using.
ive always finished With P320 dry or P800+ wet
P400 will be fine, just make sure it dont get clogged up and put any deep scratches in. ideally you want to wetflat it, it generally gives a better surface to spray and cuts down on all the excessive dust too.
back in your booth then... because a P400 dry sand is exactly the same as a P800 wetflat ;)
your P400 paper is fine for the primer although it is best to wetflat primer, id just use the P400 wet myself, will be fine
start off by drilling 2 holes in your plates where you want the screws to be. drill them BIGGER than the screws, so the screws just fall in. best to put it on a piece of wood or something so you can drill straight through, dont drill them on the floor
then put your plate to your tailgate, tape...
happens with aerosols.
just make sure you shake the can up well and warm it up beforehand to thin it right down. also make sure your finger aint getting covered in paint as that will cause "blobs"
then, hope for the best
the glue (sikaflex more than likely) literally bonds itself to the laquer and becomes 100% solid
only way to remove it will be to cut it all off and then wetflat it all perfectly without breaking the laquer.
no chance getting it all off without going through the laquer
thats the only way, just carefully slice it and with a bit of luck you should be able to just glue it on over the old glue without having to spray the top of the tailgate (if youre very careful)
try a piece of welding wire or something and just slice through it
