i use my local paint supplier for paint, only down the road. never really had problems with halfords off the shelf though. halfords/local motorspares sell primer/laquer, even ebay sell it if you dont wanna leave the house lol

prep the sidestrips, primer (plastic primer is best for plastic) but cellulose is fine if youve prepped the strips well. prime. wetflat the primer with p800, p1000 or p1200. basecoat. let it dry. laquer

if you got a good steady hand then paintbrush is fine, just dont apply too much paint or itll drip onto the other paint. touch up pen is a better option. could also mask the letters out and spray it with aerosol

you can sand it and laquer it with fine paper, but if the basecoat is ok anyway, then dont bother, just laquer straight over it
