Upgrading the HDD to 2TB is pretty cheap, plus you can use the 500GB one you take out as a standard external HDD for PC use. But if it's having issues and these are going dirt cheap, then I guess it's worthwhile buying a new one.

In my experience, films that are either streamed from illicit sources, or torrented rarely have hardcoded subtitles. Often the region of origin for films on these platforms won't be a country where English is the first language, hence no hardcoded English subs.

Get a subtitle file separately from the web and load it into Kodi.
