Yeah I know dude. It's not that though. Something in the lid itself is causing it. if i strip the boot lid bare, it doesn't do it. On the Mk3, there's a bit of plastic each side, which go up each side of the windscreen (inside). These seem to have a bit of movement and I'm thinking it's...

I spotted the other day down at the garage, that my front driver's side shock has no cup to hole the top of the spring in place. Should this have come from the factory, as seemingly the other side did!

The loud noise I thought was suspension, is actually the bootlid! It's still doing it now too. :(

As above. If you trade in as it is, it'll be seriously reduced in value, even with all the bits on it. If you have an emotional attachment to the car, then repair it. £1800 is bloody expensive IMO for the aforementioned job.

I'm not sure the fitment is correct, but the weight is totally different for a start.

Mine's a 2007 model, and has the black plastic engine cover.

AP coilovers are your best bet, and they have to be MK3 ones. ​They're around the £500 mark for a set.
