If there’s no oil in the box, take the spring loaded plunger out (16mm socket/spanner flats) and see if that makes 5th feel any better. It’s right next to the selector on the box, so you can’t miss it.

I was (I think) the first person to install a 197 head on a 172 block and run the fully variable vvt that the 197/200 runs. I ran the 197 dephaser and solenoid along with a gen90. You need to change the aspect file in the gen90 to get it to run the full vvt, but that’s something you would need...

Are you confident you’ve got all the bits out? Those needle rollers kill gear teeth and bearings mate when they come into contact.
The casings don’t weld all that well tbf, and especially that close to where the casings halves are sealed.
