yeah definitely sounds like the turbo has been ready to go and a few higher rpm pulls has pushed it over the edge

shouldn't have done it any harm, the harm is done when people don't know how to shut it off and leave it running and smoking until it uses up all its oil and seizes the engine!

sounds like the turbo has went pop and its suffered from "diesel run away" where it runs on its own oil, hence why when you turn off the ignition and the injectors stop pumping fuel, it keeps running
