unplug the switch and short the plug out and see if you've got lights then, i've had two now where the switch has been fine but a bit worn so it only just makes contact when you go in to reverse but drops as soon as you let go of the lever.

just watch out though when you fit it as it's easy to knock it off centre and they twist quite easily. have seen them twist on their own after a day or two even if the car isn't used!! it's also worth shrinking the spring a touch on the seal.

take the top bolt off the alternator and pull it forward, this gives you more slack on the belt.
