unplug the switch and short the plug out and see if you've got lights then, i've had two now where the switch has been fine but a bit worn so it only just makes contact when you go in to reverse but drops as soon as you let go of the lever.
just watch out though when you fit it as it's easy to knock it off centre and they twist quite easily. have seen them twist on their own after a day or two even if the car isn't used!!
it's also worth shrinking the spring a touch on the seal.
weight reduction is negligible, steering might feel a tiny bit more precise with the rack being solid mounted, hard to say how much is psychological though. main benefit is engine doesn't have to run the pump, again possibly psychological but engine seems to rev a little bit easier??
