As said, any used car buying is a lottery no matter what it is. If its been cherished and well maintained it should cause you no problems. Make sure all the servce intervals correspond with appropriate stamps.

For the pros and cons for performance to your 1200cc, no amount of engine mods will make it noticeablly faster. There is no substitute for cubic capacity, its slow, and always will be slow
