the amount you would spend doin up the 1.6 would kinda pay for the extra cost of the GTi and insurace!! (that is if you want to pay enough so it can keep up with the GTi). Even if you did that, the GTi would handle better standard than a 1.6! the pug has better chassis dynamics than...

i would guess (ask capt) that its for the engine to capare the two, cause emissions testing are only @ a cetain rpm.
and with euro 3 being the same as euro 2 emissions levels, just without the 5 min warm up time, the engine needs to ge the right emissions FAST i.e. straight away!
they have large amounts of overheads and development costs to recoup, and i dont think toomany people buy them as compared to the GTT engine. Just economies of scale.
