The sensation at low revs is similar. It has a slight 'waft' of thrust when dragging the car up from low rpm. Much like the low end peak torque of a TDI.
He doesn't mean it actually drives like a deisel lol.

That noise simply can't have been normal, it was obscene!

RE smoke, Its likely to be water blowing out of the exhaust, which has built up due to your short journeys.
The low pressure behind the car throws it all onto the rear windscreen.
