I'd do the former, ie fill, leave for a few weeks for the paint to harden, then wet sand and polish when you do the rest of the car. Depends on your time constraints Ads.

Berry etchings? Acid from berries can damage paint in the same way bird droppings do. So small round droplet sized marks.

Build up paint, wet sand until you're happy, polish. Apply the same stone chip logic. You'll still see it, as I can still see the smart repair on mine, but the next person to own your car won't see it.
