Project Binky - mini 4x4 turbo celica engine

Decent episode, nice to see so many fiddly bits come together.

The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

Oh god no, we’re not at GPU insanity levels or anything. My bad for mentioning what I used to do alongside an example of the point I was trying to make, which was how if you can get a good spec prebuilt with plenty of RAM at a decent price then you can’t build it yourself for less at the moment.

The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

So much this. During the GPU shortages I bought a few prebuilts and turned a decent profit on them. I mean, this is a lot of money but it’s got £700 worth of memory, a £2100 GPU, £500 CPU and by the time you factor in SSD, PSU, Case and motherboard…...

The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

AI - running large models takes s**t-tons of RAM plus devices need more onboard memory to run their AI features without going to their data connection for everything. Then you’ve got the push for graphics cards to have more memory as standard. All of this takes capacity away from conventional...

The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

If anything, I’d expect prices on pre-builds to soar once existing stock runs out because of RAM prices spiking.

    ChatGPT (AI)

It’s all because senior managers hear AI and get a combination of FOMO and cost savings dancing before their eyes IMO. Knowing what some of our offshore developers are churning out, I don’t know if AI would do it better or if they are already using AI mind you. It’s all good though, we’ll be...

Sim Rigs - Let’s see yours

I used one of these for ages, it’s useless for gaming but if you just want something compact to be able to change settings/launch games etc then it’ll do the job https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00XJ3LVPI/?tag=cliospnet01-21

    Manual swapped E61 535D

With that engine the only reason I can see for a manual is if you want to drift it, unless the auto box can’t take the torque from the upgrades?

    The Retro Gaming Thread

Yeah, you can, but the base install of the emulation software isn’t the best. For me, it’s just too small. It’s fun for a while and some games suit it better than others but games designed for a decent sized CRT lose a lot of playability when squished right down into such a tiny screen IMO.

The 'I work in I.T' thread

Yeah, until you’ve been the on call contact on the weekend for a “cannot fail” system and that issue comes in you can’t appreciate the true horror. It’s not that we have to do it, it’s that we do it and have been forever. But now, under the genius new model, the team has been split and there...

The 'I work in I.T' thread

I think I'm broken. I can't believe what a s**t show work has been this last month. For context, I look after a pretty complex fintech application. It's a bit of a monolith, and is very extensible with bolt-in pieces of code that we can write per-customer to cover bespoke needs. Customers or...

    The Retro Gaming Thread

That looks cool, much more focused on the arcades than the retro collective, which does have a decent amount of arcade games but I think it's the old micros and handhelds where they are more focused. It's been a while since I've been there now though, not for any negative reason, volunteering...

MK4 1.2 GT Line EDC, Oil smell in cabin.

Sounds like a smoke test would be a good idea for the breather system and a pressure test for the coolant system. You’ve got leaks somewhere, even if it’s only vapour.

The MoT history is a thing of beauty too. Most recent test failure list: All of the advisories where still there when it then got a pass, obviously. https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=Yt04ryj&checkRecalls=true

    Brake pad deposits - DS2500

They definitely work better on some cars than others. Couldn’t fault them on my M3 with the six pot caliper upgrade.

    Brake pad deposits - DS2500

What they said. Ds2500 likes relatively hard, short brake applications otherwise they do leave deposits. Easy enough to clean up, just give them death a few times.

Upgrade old PC to Windows 11

I'm moving away from Windows. I've been piloting using Linux on a mini-PC I bought a while back and I can't fault it. I might miss out on a few AAA games, but with the Steam Deck out there compatibility is gettting surprisingly good now. Think I'll buy a new SSD, keep the old Windows one to one...

    Chromebooks etc

There are really crap ones and quite decent ones, if she's already using Google stuff then it will all integrate together nicely, can't see any reason not to go for it personally. I've no idea what's good or good value at the moment, haven't looked at them for years, so I'd say seek out some...

    Clio 182 RB

I haven’t got my glasses on, and read that as “remove boobies from seats” First question was why remove them. Second question was where can I get seats with boobies on them. Third thought was what the actual frig am I on about. Engine rebuild price does seem spicy at first glance but then...
