    MS SQL Licences

Development/test systems can be covered by MSDN subscription, it's just live systems that require full licences. We've just discovered we can have our active/active SQL cluster on SQL Standard 2005 as opposed to Enterprise - it's only 3-node Active clusters that apparently require Enterprise

    Print Server

All the carts are available double size - and they're sturdy enough for inkjets. Couple of monthsago HP offered free 3yr NBD support and warranty.

    Print Server

Ditto. Ask anyone who works with Terminal Services and they'll tell you just how much mess a poor choice of printer can make of your system. Printers with NICs now are cheap as - and if you want one that makes your coffee for you look at the HP OfficeJet Pro L7680/7780 - for the money they're...

Help!!! PC problem, maybe my own fault!

Let me just rub my crystal ball and find out... Ooops, no, take it to someone who knows what they're doing!

Help!!! PC problem, maybe my own fault!

Did you perchance uninstall the graphics driver instead of the photoediting program?

    Mac or PC

Au contraire, sweetpea, every time there's a "Mac vs. Windows" debate, Windows users tend to say they've never understood why Macs are a million times better, whereas Mac users have to tell the world how s**t PCs and Windows are. Are we all forgetting (more now than ever!) that they run on the...

    Mac or PC

Nearly as simple as XP. Once it's enabled, right-click the file, click Properties, and then select 'Previous Versions'. You then get a list of revisions from the schedule you select and can restore or open any of them with a single click. Far more useful than 'Time Capsule', which is just a...

    New PC..

http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=314819&CatId=64 Absolute bargain, just need a low-profile Parallel port (not sure the DC's come with them anymore!).

    Mac or PC

User error or unsupported hardware. Sorry, but it's the truth. Get over it. Tens of computers installing Vista and the only times I've had it go wrong is when I've used incorrect RAID drivers, or when I've been trying to run WDDM and XPDM display cards simultaneously. Both my fault.

Xbox 360 video failure - fixable?

Correction - much easier to get it swapped. "Hello, is that India? Yeah I need a new XBox 360, this one's borked."

    Your first Windows based PC........

386SX 25Mhz running Windows 3.1. Beast!!! Not bad for a 22-year-old. Was nearly new at the time as well! First brand new machine was a 486DX2-66!

Experts Exchange - Group Policy Setup

If you don't set up DNS you can't resolve the Sysvol share to the nearest DC so you won't get policy, however you may still be able to log in due to cached credentials, or if the ldap pointers are correct...

    Network Switches.

Oh, and if anyone tells you Nortel stuff doesn't break, beat them with a large stick. Had someone tell me that for 6 months and when I looked at the problems we were having, it was due to the switches. They had broken, just nobody was looking after them.

    iTunes.

Either that or set up a few playlists for each, and set to syncronise the individual playlists automatically as opposed to 'All Music'.

    Network Switches.

Got some ProCurve 24-port switches going spare kid... Depends what you're running and where but remember what speed your WAN links are and that an 'intensive network app' on a client machine shouldn't use much more than a solid 10-meg connection otherwise you need to be looking at 4Gb minimum...

    Studying for 70-290

Group scope is fairly simple: A-G-U-DL-P - or alternatively 'A Gud LP' As for functional level, as far as 70-290 is concerned there's very little difference between 2000 Native and Server 2003, however in 2000 Mixed Mode and Windows Server 2003 Interim you can't use Universal groups. 2003...

    New laptop - Idea's welcome

Optiplex GX270 - known issue that Dell did something about - if your service tag was within the affected range all you had to do was call them and an engineer would be there next day with replacement parts.

The latest Norris Designs Evo Crash (Castle Combe)

I don't earn £100k and I'm not a pro driver, but I know full bloody well that driving a car onto grass to slow it down just won't work. Here's the science made simple for you - spray your road with fairy liquid and water and slide down it on your belly. No? Didn't think that sounded too...

    NTFS OR FAT32

Marginal performance benefit of FAT32 over NTFS, as NTFS has a lot of overhead to run it's security features. However, in saying that you'll never notice the difference and as has been said the NTFS file system is much more advanced. On anything except the most performance-critical systems NTFS...

    New laptop - Idea's welcome

Build quality in my opinion of the 4 Sony's I've had *appears* to be good, but then fails on little areas. Read above about my issues with the touchpad which *allegedly* is resolved in the new models, however after 2 weeks calling Sony every day to try and sort it I'd disagree that anyone's...

    New laptop - Idea's welcome

Not according to one of the reviews of the SZ7s I've seen... And I'm completely up-to-date on my SZ2 - it's going in the bin for a 1530 (as I've no need for it to be ultraportable now). And my bad - it's the 1330 Dell XPS. Very tidy machine, one of the girls at work just bought one for...

    New laptop - Idea's welcome

Don't get the SZ. Known issues with the trackpad just suddenly deciding it's going to be completely back-to-front. Sony have no idea. In fact if I'm honest I'd steer clear altogether. I'd go for a Dell XPS 1310 if you wanted a slimmer one - their support is getting much better now...
