How is 34mpg poor? The book figure is 34.9 is it not? It's a hot hatch for God's sake,.. I think that's good. Euro 4 engines and above are better, but this car isn't a new design.

I'm sure it's just a 'feature', but have you checked your water and oil levels? If they're consistently fine, ignore the problem and go for a boot when the roads are quiet. Car's need to be driven... Don't worry about it!
