yep they have to be free to move in the caliper, use a feeler gauge, about 1mm should be enough, if you can't slide the pads in and out of the carrier and be able to wobble them up and down, then you haven't removed enough

sounds like they're binding on when hot - ie you haven't given them enough clearance in the carrier

i haven't seen a failed engine loom in 10years Michael (not saying that it can't happen, but i'd be VERY surprised), its always something stupid like fuel pump relay or blown fuse
