It depends how out it is, you have about a full turn of leeway iirc, mine was out 180 degrees so didnt snap but brought up the fault.

Did you make sure the steering angle sensor spinny thing was centred? about 2.5 turns from one extreme to centre iirc.

You dont have to, but I would if you can be bothered to sort out all your data. You could just do the simple standard install and see how you get on, dont lose anything then
