ok so with the tool in the sump plug, and with the end of the rachet pointing towards the passenger wheel, are you pulling it towards you or pushing it away? this is with you at the front of the car obviously
the cam lobes are pressed on, that looks like a heat treatment problem when the cam was manufactured - so your dodgy batch thing rings true
are you replacing it with a NEW cam or a 2nd hand part?
its the most common in my experience, the left hand side of the car takes more load over its life span (ie roundabouts)
if it gets louder when turning right it will be the left side
