"you have to remove material from the backplate"
not actually remove the friction material from the back plate!
hot metal expands remember, they maybe fine when cold, but squeal like hell when hot
i've said hunderds of times why they don't fit in
back plates are laser cut, so there is a tollerance inaccuracey there (not much)
YOU MUST REMOVE THE CARRIER PAD SHIMS, AND ON OCCASION FILE SOME MATERIAL OF...
windows? reverse light? keys? fuel pump? everything connected to the UCH? lights, cooling fans? etc etc
have you thought this through? its going to be costly and time consuming to bin the entire car loom IMO
certain materials when TIG'ing won't take that well (if you know what to look for) something like 308 or 311 (IIRC, its been a while!) are excellent on dissimilar stainless for example
CDS to 4130 again requires a specific weld rod, or you could just "blob it up with MIG"
what a 1/4 inch in penetration? you'll struggle to penetrate 6mm in this instance!!!
the old 1 inch of weld = 1 ton of force does ring true, but thats on a min of 1.6mm thick using the hounsfeild (IIRC) test method (ie stretch test) same "strength" if you will on same material thickness can be...
matt the boy wonder is still alive though ;)
