You can get a non-remote key from most high street key cutting places. They will copy the immobiliser part. Our local place charges £30 for a fully working key.
Ideal for an emergency key. Less ideal if it's a regular key as you'll lose the remote locking option.

Jo is back in hospital as of tomorrow and it may be a long termer so I've no idea what's happening with work/ kids etc.

I've got to be honest, one of our cars had them fitted and I couldn't tell the difference! Lol.
New Standard ones will be better in terms if money saved. And Trophy's were hardly known for being sloppy when they were new.
It will be the storage/transport cups I expect.
We get them at work but in all fairness they do die down over time. (On the demonstrators that I see every day)
Oddly though, some are much worse than others. I can see no logical explantIon for that.
