Andy; I've done a few repaired cars and this is what I do...
The car (once repaired-ish, they really aren't fussy! lol) needs to go to your local DVLA for a VIC. They won't inspect the repair or be worried about how safe the car is, they just want to make sure you haven't welded two cars...

It all comes down to budget.
If you're looking at spending under £3k then i'd rather buy a mint 172.
For me it means I don't have to keep going on to the vosa site to look up the advisories on peoples part exchanges. Proper PITA.
IF I can type them up myself i'll be even happier! lol!!
It was a few years ago now, but the insurance company used to just send the salesman the email. So i'd print out the email, delete the email. Done! lol.
I've had three trafic boxes rebuilt in the time i've been trading.
The third is still at the gearbox place. £800 including vat for removal, rebuild and refit.
The boxes on them are a pain in the ass. Only weak point on the van though imo. Bloody brilliant vans. Light years ahead of a transit.
