Right ive taken it to a local exhaust specialist and it turns out that it isnt the exhaust atall causing the problem, turns out the car is firing on 3 cylinders, it could possibly be Spark plugs, HT leads or a coil pack. Not good whatever it is!

How can i check if the HT leads are gubbed?

From what you would save on fixing the Clio and spending on the Astra to look good you could insure the Civic, as you know the build quality is second to none. Why do you say its expensive to insure? You can get a 1997 Civic VTi for £3000-£4000 (it would be minted at this price) 10 year old...
