I think my dads 172 idles at about 500-600. Most have a lumpy idle too.

If you just put a set of the mk2's on it it'll look naff unless you drop it a touch, a 172 is lower than a normal clio as standard.

Check that it goes into each gear ok & that it doesn't pop out of gear, listen out for crunching noises etc. For the clutch, the easiest way is to do 30mph in top gear, but your foot down & see what happens. If the revs shoot up it's slipping. Check the biting point out too, listen out for...

Which ones you after ? Mk1 or mk2 ? If you've already put a wanted ad on here, bump it up so folk can see it. Check the parts for sale section too as most folk just offer things for sale, they don't look in the wanted part. Check ebay.

Check for a pile of bills, old mots & that sort of thing. If he can't provide things i'd think about leaving it. Check the gearbox & clutch out, it may need one or both soon. You MUST get it hpi'd though.

Check all of the paperwork, cambelt change etc etc. Hpi it up to make sure it's not recorded, cat d write off etc. Check for any signs of damage to it/bodged up repairs it may have.

I like cups as standard.
