Yeah 172 hubs.. heres how I did it: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?364502-Mk1-F4R-172-d-Track-Car-Project&p=6955220&viewfull=1#post6955220
Yeah, heard the same quite a lot as ive been reading over the past few months, I just finished doing mine with press studs to hopefully...
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Adam hadnt connected them up yet, was a work in progress picture ;)
As wilky said really, just work through it and its not too hard, literally just swapping connector blocks!
If you are going to get a screw in style kit I would recommend getting studs that are proper machined high strength steel and not cheap zinc plated stuff like most of the kits are, ive heard bad things about the threads f**king up after only a few changes if you're going to be swapping wheels...
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Not mine but Adam's -
You can see the brown and white (Mk1) connector blocks at the bottom of the image. Basically all you are doing is removing the 172 engine loom connector (Thats what the main table in my guide is) and connecting the wires upto the Mk1...
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
The shock mounting faces on the uprights were overhanging by around 1mm before they were machined to fit the Williams shocks. By that I mean the shock mounting faces were wider than the stucture going upto it... We take 2mm off each side, as the Williams...
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Cool - thanks for the link, looks like it could be far easier!
Which threads do you mean, the actual stud/nut thread? I put some on the inside of the new nuts before screwing them upto the wheel so the whole thread would not be covered in it...
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Used a grinder and cut it off, then went to the scrap yard and took the complete line off another car - luckily it was the shortest one!
Cool, il have a look into that!
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Unfortunately the rears cant be done the same as the thread for the wheel bolt is on the disc itself and not a hub :( Ive seen them converted to rear hubs before but it means bigger disks I think which is more effort than its worth really. The rears take...
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Finally got the hubs finished today, all good and miles easier to change wheels :) Heres how I did it...
Start with two well used 172 hubs that have been machined down to fit my setup (4mm off the shock mounting face)...
Press (or hammer) the stub...
If your using the Mk1 clocks you have to add a 'pull up' resistor (10k to 12v) otherwise the revs show half...
Other wiring may be because your loom is a Ph2 or Ph2.5, I dont even know what variant mine is (that the guide works from), although adams dash worked etc... Time to get the multimeter...

Ah so its the head that physically holds them in place with force downwards, interesting!
He already did once... I doubt he will do it again after going back to the C1J lol.
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project
Mentioned welding earlier in the thread with regards to 'screw in' stud kits, bit more info...
The way ive done it will be 100% fine, its basically exactly the same as many OEM manufacturers use from the factory. They are acctually OEM studs that are...
