I stopped for a cuppa and had a chat with my mate who owns the garage about the procedure, cant take any risks with this I dont fancy bending a bunch of valves! I threaded the belt on, then released all the pulleys - if you look at the pics you can see they all have 4 10mm bolts holding them in...
The way its set up means I could drop the whole cradle down complete, and though the engine mounts are suspended it sits on blocks within the subframe easily. With the engine down and car up, i didnt need to move it anywhere (which means it stayed in the right place to go back in). No need to...
Update time - car was SORN'd for a bit as the belts were due - big job. It last had a belt service in 2015, schedule is 5 years or 72k. Ill run belts 50% over on time if the mileage is low, so 7.5 years which was last year hence it got parked.
So - IT'S TIME. After considering multiple ideas...
Yes mate it did, thanks! Pleased its at least drivable to make garage logistics easier. Also nice to be working on something I might make a few quid on when done! (assuming I can bring myself to sell it!)
Reminder to self - fit the f'king reverse switch sensor BEFORE you fill the gearbox oil - fuming!
I stuck the 9 in the work area to see if I could get the lump to fire now the red 21 is movable, so I threw the engine oil and gearbox oil in, connected up the fuel pipework and an EFI fuel reg...
Couple of undercarraige shots before I dropped it off the stands
Oooo shiny heatshield sir?
And we're out! Bloody handbrake doesnt work which is annoying but its moving under its own steam, which I count as excellent.
Fantastic progress! I was never a 5 lover, too small for my size, but I still have a 9 Turbo (same engine), and 2 21 Turbo's from that era. Brilliant cars!
Refitted the rubber trim on the nosecone - if you dont use double sided tape to seat it it never looks right even with the plugs in place.
Found some trim to replace the headlight rubber seal, its not an exact match but I think it'll work. Old ones are all bubbly and horrible.
MUCH...
Doing my best! Should be a fairly nice motor when done and if garaged, which I hope it will for the money ill be asking, should be a good solid classic for many years to come with only routine maintenance.
Back once again (with the renegade master?)
Sourced some new front discs & fitted them, wasnt happy with used ones. Then made & soldered in some little patch looms for the headlights, for some reason the blocks that adapt in to the headlight bulb connector to run the main cells were missing...
Try the launch control! It's hilarious! Go into race mode, foot on brake, pull back both paddles, when it tells you floor the throttle and then release the brake to launch :D
Yes they do very much so, with a DSG fart on the upshift and a throttle blip on the downshift. it also really pulls up...
This is important. Do not use stainless bolts on suspension, steering or load bearing items, you need to stick to 10.9 carbon steel. Stainless is no stronger than normal 8.8 steel bolts. 10.9's if plated are fairly resistant to corrosion so get those.
If it helps add weight to the above I...
How hard did the pistons hit the valves? If its any more than a couple of light clips then I'd be wanting to pop the pistons out and check the big end bearings for flat spots/damage. You dont want to rebuild the top end to then have a flat spotted bearing pick up and ruin your engine in 200...
I'm in Cov and based on my >25 years in the Renault scene I wouldnt take it anywhere around here. i wont even leave my car anywhere unattended for tracking or tyres.
Best I can recommend is my friends garage in Redditch, about half an hour away, Lakeside Service Centre. Ian is a fantastic...
Shelsey is also a consideration in the same vein, Retro Rides was always great there. Didnt float my boat last year when it moved to Mallory, felt like a different vibe.
Not far off, correct save its front drivers (note the steering rack fitting top left).
You can look at the entire shambles in this thread, you'll be amazed how comprehensively it turned itself to iron oxide.

I tarted up the fog surrounds as well, and bolted them in. Had to make some new screws for the fogs also, pain in the arse but the old ones were yukky and rusty.
Still plugging away, was flaming cold this weekend and heater ran out of gas so I didnt stop for many pics. However, I did get the exhaust completed, welding in a gasketed flange join for the back cos a really hate sleeve joints.
new downpipe gasket / old downpipe gasket
Got a bit...
When I got the brakes back together I filled the res up with fluid and bled some through the system, then bled up the clutch. I go no pedal at all, great! Bled the port on the master, got some yukky fluid through, still no pedal. Bled from the slave again, STILL no pedal.
Another dreaded...
One of the plastic tabs that holds the control cables in to the control arms of the heater panel was broken, seriously, f**k these things they suck. Can't get em new any more it seems (surprise surprise). I employed an M5 bolt to secure the cable end in.
End tank swap.
I sank the end tank in on some sealant after a good clean, put it in a furniture clamp and tapped the tabs back in gently.
I sat that to dry off and went and did the thing in the next post, then once that was done came back to this and dropped it in the heater box
