It does take a while to master it, no tripod required, monopod can help at slower shutter speeds, but i found most of my best shots were without one.

it won't get scratched if you look after it and keep the lens caps on. they are pretty rugged things

£414 isn't that good a deal IMO. If you want to be able to get some older cheap lens, then get the D50/350D. D40 lens are generally more expensive, and there is less choice. D40 is more user friendly though

the dirt is only present on the photos taken at f20, the other one is f8 and not visible. Either get your sensor cleaned or use a larger aperture!

for true 5.1 surround you need an optial lead. If you don't have this on your surround sound system, just use 2 RCA from the TV into the surround sound. It won't be true 5.1 but you'll get virtual surround from your speakers
