On the small end it should be offset with the longer bit upwards, if not it can tip the engine back a tad and the exhaust can knock on the anti roll bar.
There's an easier way to see if the cam timing is out, WITHOUT using timing tools and dismantling the car.
Only problem is you will need to either borrow a Renault Clip machine or find a way of accurate manifold pressure measurement.

The rollcage is the one from Mark Fish's race car, last time it was in his car was at a support race in Monaco I think. It was in candy metallic red originally.

Mind you looking at the photo above, the gear oil seems forwards of the selector seal.
Is it leaking from the breather pipe on top of the gearbox?
Also, if there is evidence of oil spraying around the bell housing (where it joins to the engine block) it maybe the oil seal of the input shaft...

Agree with the noise......but, many moons ago my first job was working for a corvette specialist in Hildenborough,kent.
We had to take some cars to a show at knebworth. I thought all my numbers had come up when the guys suggested I drive the 1966 427 tri power to the show complete...
.....there red were blue flags (waved and stationary) for nearly two laps.
The thing is, with mixed classes you really need your senses about you as the speed differential with some of these cars is massive.
Glad to see the driver get out safely, he's going to be a bit sore today I guess.
