£500 budget Computer.

  340i
Hi guys,

I am speccing / building a Computer for a friend, he has given me a £500 budget to build the base unit. He already had a good display and peripherals, OS is sorted too.

It will be used for GoPro video editing, light photography work and general browsing. I've been trawling OC over lunch and come up with the below spec:

Forgot to mention... We already have a couple of 1TB HDD's to fit. Now concentrate on the rest of the build! ;)

Good combo, very similar to my recent upgrade. I went for the Asus P8Z77-V PRO Z77 board but that's a bit more pricey.

3570k o/c'ed to 4.5ghz instantly which will do me nicely.

Do we think a GPU card will be needed for video editing, or will intergrated HD 4000 Graphics be good enough? (I know video editing is more CPU and memory hungry, but how much so on the GPU...)

I know Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas video editing software supports CUDA or OpenCL acceleration to hand off some of the rendering work to the GPU on newer cards.

I've used the option myself rendering video, but not sure if it made that much difference over just CPU. I think it becomes more effective on the high end Quadro cards etc.

It is HD gopro footage yes, unsure what editing program I'll end up using but that's a decision for the future. Thanks for the input, gives Gray and I something to think about

Get the shiniest bit you can. If not shiny, the more lights and flashes the better.

also, a randomly generated computer character on the box is meant to mean good things.

you're welcome x

Get a decent video card for graphics/video editing.

Can't see the onboard doing too well, especially if he is doing gopro hd editing (is he?).

Would also consider better cooling for the processor
Ahh yep, I will get a retail chip and a different heatsink and fan.

Decide on the application then we can check the requirements / reccomended spec.

We put this build on hold for a couple of months, but back with it now... I've changed the spec slightly and we've up with the above.

I think the Noctua CPU cooler may be slightly OTT, but I love the quality of their components. Would you swap this out for something cheaper though?

No need for a storage drive?

Also if your not gonna be overclocking the cpu, you could get a way with much cheaper cooler tbh.

Nvm, just read your last sentence ^^ The coolermaster hypers are supposed to be good value for money, here

We've got a couple of 1TB HDD's to use for storage :)

Plan is to clock the CPU to 4.0 4.2GHZ.

We are adding a decent GPU at a later date.

Ahh, ok then. Looks decent to me, have you seen the Phantek coolers? I have this one and can't recommend it enough, a bit cheaper (and nicer looking :p) than the Noctua

Looks like a decent spec, not been in air cooling for a good while, but Noctua were certainly the best back in the day iirc :)

As above though, Phantek coolers are meant to be up and coming, so maybe worth seeing how much cheaper one is!

Whats the 2nd fan for, the other side of the cpu cooler? Potentially not needed, or as above Phantek I think come with 2 fans anyway and cheaper, so you may be able to save £40 :)

2nd fan may be a chassis fan

The second Noctua fan was for the other side of the heatsink.

I'll check out some cheaper coolers, do love the Noctua kit though aha :)

I'd get a bigger PSU as if he ever wants to upgrade that'll need doing as well. I'd look for a 750w jobbie, Dabs had a sale on the other day have you checked there? Infact have you priced the same system up on Dabs?
