04 clio sport 182 wont start!

  Clio 182
I bought my Clio 182 2 months ago and it has been pretty much fine but now i have had trouble starting it.

to start with it would start fine run for 2 seconds then simply die, then start after a few attempts,

now i cannot start it at all, it turns over for a few seconds then the starter motor cuts out.

after several attempts i didn't wanna flood it so i went round the back end and expecting to smell a quite strong petrol smell i could smell nothing.

i have had jump leads, battery recharged.

and feedback would be greatly appreciated

Cheers.

p.s. just had a better look at the forum... if im in the wrong sections now, please move the thread :)

There seems to be alot of this at the moment. Have a quick search mate, theres a few recent threads about this problem.

My 182 was same just wouldn't start even try jump start. It turned out it was the earth strap from starter motor

I was told last winter that it could be the Throttle body sticking in the cold. Never got round to fixing it but as soon as the weather got warm it started working fine so it could be the problem.

if the immobilizer light is the one in the middle of the dashboard it is staying solid red?

leave the key in the ignition (all lights on dash) for about 15min, then try again

don't do this if you live in the ghetto though

keys are in.. luckily i live in a quiet village not Beirut...

i dont suppose you could tell me the possible cause aswell?

as lemonwotsit says you could have a hooky car battery, voltage has dropped a bit causing the immobiliser to lock the car out, get the jump leads out!

just one more silly question... that 15 mins you said about if the immobilizer light is still solid after that... shall i just leave the key in and on or shall i try to start the car?

the light should go out after 10-15min (put the jump leads on at the same time)

we're guessing here to an extent as this is the internet

ok no luck withthe keys in the ignition for a while...

when i had the bonnet open for the jump leads i noticed a quite high pitch constant squeeling noise but fairly quiet coming from the right hand side of the rocker box top... i will upload a pic in a min when i figure out how to do that..

i have tried the plip quite a lot of times my old 1.2 clio used to have that problem.

now also a sound wich is kind of like a coarse rubbing from the right hand side of the steering wheel just after i turn the ignition...

this seems hopeless :-(

I think it will come down to the AA in the end

I don't know if you've solved your problem but try this:

Mine used to do a similar thing although I've sold it now. Started it to clear the ice off the screen etc. Noticed when it started, the engine was running for about 0.5 seconds before rev. counter or petrol gauge moved. Turned it off and went back inside. Went back out, started fine and parked it on the road. Next time I tried to start it it wouldn't work. Turns over about four times and then stops you cranking it over and you just get a clicking noise as already described. RAC came and couldn't fix it, but I had them fit a crankshaft sensor. Got it towed to local garage. Garage got it to work as follows:

1. Turn ignition on to the second click and leave the car door open so you don't get locked out.
2. Disconnect the battery. (8mm spanner on negative terminal)
3. Wait for 2 or 3 mins.
4. Re-Connect battery.
5. Turn the key off and remove.
6. Get out, shut the door and lock the car.
7. Un-lock the car and try to start it.

This worked first time. It seems to reset the immobiliser or something but cars going great now. Also, the changing of the crankshaft sensor seems to have stopped the "engine running before rev. counter situation".

Hope this works with yours ;)

P.S you might want to make sure the battery's well charged if you've been trying to start it loads of times.
