1.2 disk change

  Clio 1.2 16v
Hi,

Eventually a 172/182 engine will be going into my bay... but i want to get it colourcoded first and do some other bits to it.

I'm obviously going to need better brakes. So is it possible to replace the drums with discs? is it do-able

Assume your on about the rear brakes? I've heard of people putting 1*2 beams on the rear, or was it RSI ones lol.

You can swap to the 172 front setup if you've got the hubs etc, they're far superior to the 1.2 16v brake setup imo. As for the rears yes you can easily swap the axle to a disc one but you'll encounter problems with the ABS unless you swap the ABS over from the 172.

You got the full donor car? or a conversion "kit". There no real benefit swapping the rears over other than them looking pretty anyway tbh, the rear does very little braking.

ah ok, not got any yet. Was looking at buying a 172 donor car from auction and using all the parts from that

i could even buy a set of 172 discs and breaks and fit them that would work right?

could pick them up from ajay autoparts :D

For the fronts yes but you need to swap the hubs and hence the suspension to the 172 stuff fit the calipers.

its a bit of an all or nothing affiar to tell you the truth im still not 100% decided how to do mine
ive got both the full 172 running gear setup and the 1.2 lot but ideally want to keep the 1.2 stuff as i want to keep narrow track,,

cant use the 172 discs and calipers as the caliper brackets are different meaning youd need to use the 172 hubs which then means you need 172 shocks which then puts the camber out so you have to use 172 wishbones which of course now youve gained 10 mil a side in track width means you need the longer 172 shafts.
next plan is 172 shocks which il modify to sort the camber, hubs (and brakes)

imo no point speculating you need to just get the parts and start seeing what fits.

and if you are buying an accident damaged car it couldnt be simpler its just basically a reshelling job it becomes a bit of a challenge when you buy just the parts
