1.4 Vs 1.2 Vs DCI

  Breaking A 172 Replica
Replacing my car (a 1.2) and I am considering the above.

I really need to get out and have a test drive in the 1.4 and DCI models but in the meantime was wondering what your thoughts on each were and which one you would choose.

I do a fair few motorway miles, MPG reasonably important, like to drive it quite hard and have a budget of 3.5k. Insurance is also a key issue as I am only 17.

Advice or experiences would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys

DCI.

Right up the arse of a 1.6 in 2nd and 3rd gear. Not much slower in 4th.. And in 5th..... Well it's faster than your 1.2 at least.

I reset the computer recently at 115mph (GPS- practically max) and it was getting 35mpg............ Seriously, I just can't get it below 45 when actually driving.

Mine is going up for sale soon, £5k though.. 35k miles, service done, 5 months or so warranty, 04 plate.

Not sure which one he was referring to.

I would be looking at either the 65 or 80.

Thanks for your replies so far.......

What about a 1.6, whats the difference in price on your insurance quotes, wont be that much of a difference i would of thought.

  Breaking A 172 Replica
The quotes for insurance are as follows:

1.2 - 730
1.4 - 820
1.6 - 1101
DCI 65 - 759
DCI 80 - 803

Thats is in my mums name (she has six points) with me as as named driver.

Given these quotes I cannot justify a 1.6.

However the others are certainly viable.

Thanks for contributions so far.

How will the performance compare between them all on a day to day basis?

Whys that?

I push 1.6s down the A5 every day with no trouble in an 80

You'll be happy you got a DCI

and i've turned every dci i've come across inside out lol

but as i've said i've never seen a dci 100 yet (i believe they have more than just the blue i on the badge)

I've talked to people with dci 100's who've kept up with 172s to a certain speed, due to the torque they have. I'd defo go for the diesel. 1.2s are slow, 1.4s not too bad but still dont 'feel' as quick as the diesel

The dCi100s have a blue Ci bit on the badge. I always hear from the dCi owners how they can keep up with much (on paper) quicker things and i'm not interested in any arguments but when you look at the stats I just can't see it.

1.6 : http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/data-detail.aspx?deriv=24165
dCi80: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/data-detail.aspx?deriv=24542
dCi100: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/data-detail.aspx?deriv=26766

Even the 100 doesn't look as if it'd trouce all over the 1.6, though I suppose the greater torque has its advantages somewhere.

Figures make the DCI's look far slower than they really are, like the figures Parkers give say. I can keep up with 1.6s giving it the large one to about a tonne, then I'd say they pull infront (tried & tested) Mines standard. Bmh you'll have to have a play in mine if your only in sunny Nuneaton.

They're pretty rare Dink & if you do find one it'll probably be driven by an oldie, and have a towbar on the back

Roughly I'd say...
1.4 about the same as the 65bhp
1.6 about the same as an quick 80 depending
172 depending, about the same as a (Mapped) 100bhp

Wait for Edde though I believe hes pushed a few sports round track

Edit - Middo your on track mate you'll love diesels one day, almost there

Yup living it up just down the road in nuneaton, should sort something out so you can convert me :). Never even been near a dCi let alone in one.

That and you might be able to tell me what my annoying mystery suspension noise is :rasp: :D.

  BMW M135i
Yup, nothing untoward looking. Now i've been listening to it it sounds like something rubber like a gaitor being compressed and uncompressed sort of a poppy noise (good description lol), although when you look at everything theres no marks or bits of crap that have been rubbed off anything on the strut. Was thinking it could be the strut cover before that, but back at zero again now.

Personaly you need to drive them all and better still a few of each as you get good and bad ones the hammered ones are often the 65hp ones so quicker than they would be. This is due to the fact they were free insurance when your young and loads of young people bough them and hammered them loosening them up.

If I were choicing now I'd go for the 80 I think. I don't like the 100's gearbox the 65 is fine but I'd like a few more hp and there not much extra.

Yep these modern petrol cars are slow.

here 65hp at work
