1.5 dci Knocking noise - sounds bad!?

My 1.5dci 80 just started making a very bad knocking noise from the engine. Its running fine apart from the knock. I cant pin point the knock except it sounds like its coming from the front of the engine. It rises and falls with RPM and being in gear or not.

Its quite a slow knock, and the engine is still running on 4 cylinders.

It has made a similar but not so bad noise previously, however it disappeared after turning it off and on.

Ideas? Sorry about the rubbish description.

I will add that the alternator has been suspected to be near the end of its life for a while. It doesn't sound like its coming from the alternator however, but its hard to tell being a pretty noisy engine to start with.

any tar like stuff around the injectors?

One of the hex bolts next to the glow plugs is covered in oil/tar. Not noticed anything around the injectors through...

As above, could be a chuffing injector. Could even be diesel knock, this can sound horrendous! Has it done moon miles?

The sound is a noticeably bad noise. And a real heavy knock, but quite slow. Pretty gutted as the car only had about 3 weeks left with me before being part ex!

yeap its an injector seal. £2 from renault a pain to fit though

Do you know of any guides on how to replace them?
