1.6 power gains?

  RB 182 cup
Hi all,

currently got a 52 plate ph2 1.6 16v that's just about to get a lot of work done to it. My current engine is burning oil from which we believe is the valve stem seals but I've been told its not really worth fixing expense wise, so just ordered a another 1.6 with the gearbox both on 62k with a brand new clutch all delivered for £440, not a bad price I don't think. With all the money that I've spent on it already and the money that will be going into it at the end of the month it's not really worth selling. I've currently got enough money to go out and by a sport but don't want to chuck away what I've already spent so I'm planning on keeping it for a while and doing something different with it. What can I do it to gain some more power? I'm obviously not expecting to get clio sport power without forced induction but wondering what I could do in the mean time that's not too heavy on the wallet but may get me a little more power from it?

cheers for any advice and ccomments

I would say if you had time to wait...wait for a new Clio4 with a 1.6turbo which was rear ended and put that in...I reckon that would be a good conversion!

That's quite a good idea Don, but I can see it being quite complicated, likely as not it'd require the whole front end's worth of transmission and possibly the suspension also.

That would be a very good conversion, probably quite complicated like McGherkin said but would be different

Seriously?

Wait for a car that's just out to be rear ended?

Am I missing something here? If it is the valve stem oil seals just change them. I am thinking there must be more issues if a new engine is being considered as more cost effective though.
As said already if you want power a 1*2 is the best bet, it's all done for you by Renault already.
If you want something different an engine swap can be considered. I have 5 GT Turbo engines in the clio. They are not the most reliable engine when tuned for big power but are a straight forward simple design. What ever you do good luck :)

There are 1.6 16V engines out there that can push over the 'magical' 200bhp mark in (tuned) NA spec - Civic, Saxo etc. See what you can do with the Clio. At the very least you'll need ITBs, cams and forged internals.

The easy option is to buy an F4R. The hard but much more fun option is to do some development.

Because the top end has to be pretty much re built, then I'll have a strong top end and a weak bottom end, which means its easier to get a new one. Like Lt Columbo said you can tune the 1.6's so why not? Or yeah maybe do an engine conversion with a 1*2. Just want to do something a bit different. Anyone can go out and buy a sport so why be a sheep? Don't be afraid to do something different.
