1 quick MOT question

The DCI's middle brake light isn't lighting up when the peddle is pressed. The other 2 in the clusters are fine.

Would this fail and MOT as it's coming up next week and I'm snowed under.

100% fail... all brake lights must work when the pedal is pressed.

It will pass as long as you cant see that its connected. Its an additional brake lamp. (im a tester and my last refresher course they mentioned this)

Yeah they seem to change this rule alot. But atm its not a failure.

So undo the headlining and disconnect it, leave wire hanging?

You'd have to take the spoiler off to disconnect it. A random bit of wire poking out the headlining on the other hand...

Spoiler off isn't exactly hard though. Not that the tester's going to rip your car apart to see if it's connected or not lol

Removing the spoiler all together would be my advice to but really it should be working. If it came to me the brake light forms part of a body panel which can be removed but as it's a factory fit item i'd class it as not technically an "Additional" brake light.

Stop being tight and just replace the bloody thing as they're a huge £23. Besides, a Policeman will just hand you a defect notice if you ball round with it not working.

Thanks Mic, is that the price of the spoiler with brake light or just the brake light? I agree it's 100% not cricket but can't afford the time for a fail currently.

That's just the brake light chap. They're prone to water ingress into the PCB but the connection is also susceptible to corrosion on the pins so pull the lamp out and see if cleaning the connections makes it work again... could be a cheap simple fix.

Could you not just remove the brake light unit from the spoiler?

And Mick, aren't the two outer brake lights on either side classed as mandatory and any other brake lights are classed as additional? If not, what is an additional brake light when it's at home lol.

Correct, the outer extremities are mandatory but all cars have had factory fitted third/central brake lights since before 2003 so I personally want to see them working if fitted... my discretion and unplugging it alone won't sway the decision.

Remove it all together or if it's there then make it work.

To end the thread. Having taken the spoiler off it was the brake light that was full of water. New one ordered. Cup spoiler on until the new one arrives!
