1080p 1920 x 1080 - dual use - TV / Computer monitor?

  Rav4
Hi guys,

Do any of you guys use a TV as a computer monitor too?

Basically, want to make space in my room, and could use the TV and my comp screen too.

I was going to get the dell 2707WFP (1900 x 1200) but thinking of getting something bigger, that has a remote too, thus looking at normal TV's for a dual purpose.

The resolution is slightly different though.

Any thoughts, recommendations?

I tried it with my 40" tv and its far too big! lol

I have it on a dual screen now though so i can run HD stuff through it

The aspect ratio is different.

"Square" screens are 4:3 for TV's and 5:4 for monitors.

Widescreens are 16:10 on monitors and 16:9 for TVs.

You'd be fine getting a PC monitor that has a TV tuner built in, although the picture might look slightly narrower than it should.

i have a dell 2407 monitor which i run at 1920x1200, and i have a 47" toshiba which i run at 1920x1080.

tv's which only support 1366x768 are not great for using as a monitor cos the resolution isn't really good enough for full time usage, but if your tv supports 1920x1080 then yeah it's more than good enough.

Adam,

Even though the screens are completely different sizes, can you notice much difference in regards to 1900 x 1200 and 1920 x 1080? i.e the sharpness, text readibility and so on.

Thanks very much guys.

yes, very much so.

my 2407 is leagues ahead of my tv in terms of sharpness and quality, but that is to be expected IMO bearing in mind that the 2407 is designed foremost as a monitor. the actual difference between the resolutions though is pretty minimal, you have the same kind of screen real estate to play with.
