16v gearbox dying

On my way to work this morning and everything ok, stopped at some lights..set of again, 1st ok, 2nd ok 3rd, loud crack and popped out of gear, tried again, and same....put in 4th and then back to 3rd, and ok. Came off a round about and same happend again, like its not just selecting 3rd and spitting it strait out again....is it new gearbox time???? never done this b4...

Some one help!!!!! how much is this gonna cost??

Also, cluth is very spongy - biting point is way further back than normal, and clutch pedal has to be almost against footwell when changing gear....and a lot of play with the pedal when its in its neutral position, maybe an inch...

Anyone know?

Gearboxes arent disposable units: they can be rebuilt. But its often cheaper to get a whole new one.

Thats what was happening to me!! Started by a little bang when cruisin in 5th and would pop outta gear, then started doing it within every 4-5 seconds in 5th gear, so i had only 1-4. Then it started happening in 4th, then 3rd, then cruncing noises started when engaged and moving.

I got the garage to send my gearbox off to a compnay which then sent me a new (re-conditioned) box, all cost me £450(£100 labour).

I had previously been told by the garage that serviced my car, my gearbox had a small leak. Wetha that had progressed and practically drained all my gearbox oil im not sure, but check yours for leaks!

My gearbox leaves massive patches of oil where ever i park it, could this be it? Better take to the garage..

Yeah mine leaks quite bad, but I keep topping it up every month, and it seems to be lasting, although very slight whine in third, bottom of box is that coated with oil can never see where it comes from, where you get valver box for £450 for future reference, cheers

From what ive heard Valvers are prone to this...popping outta gear !!..... just not to the extent that yours does will..... mine sometimes pops out if i go over a large bump !!...the gearbox that is !!...keep it clean !!...lol

ive got a book here on the 16v, with car tests in it ...they had a 3000 mile 16v & even that poped out of gear !!



Anyone else finding this....or heard this as a common fault ??
