16v Gearbox Leak

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Just been informed by a user that the leak near my downpipe plastic cover (underneath the engine bay) is actually gearbox oil. Has any1 had this problem? Any1 know where the leak is probably from? Any1 had theirs fixed?

Could this explain my gears becoming stiffer to change?

Thanx

What dyou mean? What happened to urs?

Whats this about the M & N plate 16vs having naff boxes?

Getting Reno to have a look at mine on Thursday.

I have that leak also, and cant trace it as it seems to be everywhere, I am not bothered about it the now as they are fairly easy to top up anyway. However anybody know where to get a new gearbox, how much from renault or gearbox specialist to supply only

It could be just a the top up nut just not being fastened correctly, this is at the front of the box and could seep down into the plastic tray mentioned above, assuming it is the plastic tray that clips onto the base of the engine to keep the gear linkage clean.

I let mine leak for months and topped it up once....it packed up yesterday...

onlt 1st and 5th work and reverse...

Get it sorted, mines costing £450ish to recon and new clutch at same time..

sh*te one! Thought that might have been the case! Lame enit! But better than £800 for new box from renault! And im well pleased with my re-con, just like new! BTW see if you can get the linkage sorted aswell, this stops all the movement in the gearstick, worth doing at the time. I found out the hard way! :(

Nice one, ill try that when its goes in for surgery, see what the guy sez about the linkage, is it expensive to replace, or does it just need fixing?

Linkage is pis* easy i think. Ill ask for that to be looked at 2.

No way i need a box! If Reno say i do with-out a good reason they can take a jump. Mines working good and has since i got the car, just noticed the leak and the gear change got a little difficult earlier this week, which is just a linkage fault im sure. Watch this space for what Reno say or do when i take it in on Thursday. Not really worried.

Must be very common then, but rather be safe than £500 short! My shield was cracked & repaired with some tape so ill get that replaced too. Like i said my box feels fine 95 percent of the time so probably just the linkage & ill get it topped up with oil aswell.

Mine was leaking but when i took the engine out other week i noticed how it was the inner cv boot on the passanger side it has a ring with three holes when you bolt the shaft in it seals the box the seal was split. cost me £7.50 for a new boot not fitted it yet gonna wait till nearier the time of the engine going back in.

This caused gear oil to collect on the black tray that covers the selector mechanism then drip to the floor

Rustys u mean? :(

CLIO16V_BOY, it was the identical problem to urs, even down to it being the off-side inner boot! Gator had ripped causing leak. Reno said it was leaking pretty bad & quoted me 200 for the work to be done. Got it done at a decent local garage today for 150, lucky otherwise would have had to have been next week.

I advise all 16v owners with the leak near the drip tray to have it looked at cause my gearbox feels sweat now, few more weeks & would have probably needed a new box!

Owning a 16v does really add up!
