172 and 182 engines are they the same?

The engine in my 182 has died and im looking for another engine to put in it. Some one has told me that the 172 engine is the same as the 182 but just has a breather plate under the inlet manifold ? Is this true ?.

If so is it just a case of taking it off and then sticking the 182 manifolds and bits to it ?

yup, if it comes with the upper inlet. the take off for the carbon canister is different but can just blank it off or change the pipe as well.

So it needs a 172 inlet to fit. I cant use the existing inlet. Is there anything else needed?

fit wise they are, heads are different though (portsize etc)

you can use the 182 upper inlet on the 172 but it will need modifying to sit properly on the 172 head.
