172 burning smell **

Errr just drove to the shop for lunch..... and on the way back got a strong burning smell. Got back to work and opened the bonnet, there is a strong burning smell coming from the back of the engine bay.

As well ive noticed the exhaust is a bit louder, ie when i lift of the throttle it splutters a bit?

Any ideas/?

I have been driving rapidly but i always do and never had this smell.

No the exhaust is not new, its hte crappy std one

you been riding the clutch, did it feel slightly more sluggish than normal, your clutch could be sticking / slipping, causing that smell...

hmm, all the same after the last one went up in smoke I would be cautious.

ps. Did we ever find out why that other 172 went up ?

I would say there is an oil leak, but then that wouldnt make the exhaust louder, hmmmm.

check you oil level to see if its buring oil and also check that there is water in your radiator cos if it over-heats then your head will blow.

it sounds to me like youve got a hole in the exhaust and its blowing out all the carbon thats built up since new.

Now you mention it the clutch has been a bit cack for the last few weeks, bitting really near the top and jerking now and again...?

Would be the case on a 4month old car with 10kmiles on it?

I do however drive my car like i stole it. all day. every day.

sounds like what happened to me, oil cap loose and was causing a slight leak on the hot manifold?
