172 Buying/Maintainance questions?

Hello everyone,

Im new here and have couple of questions.

Im looking at buying a 52plate Monaco blue 172.

Just wondered is there anything to look out for, problems, faults etc?

also...

What are the service costs invclved (small service and large service)? Its done 47k and requires the 48k service straight away. When do the belts need changing and how much am i looking at for this?

Any other info would be greatfully recieved.

Many Thanks
Adam

Make sure the cambelt has been done..should be done at 72k or 5 years iirc and it will set you back anywhere between £400-700 depending who does it

5 years or 72,000 miles whichever is soonest, So it should have been done last year. The auxilliary belt should get done at the same time (its a big job and its worth while)

I think as long as the car has been cared for its not too troublesome, neglect of servicing can be a b**ch on the Renaults.

As far as servicing goes its night and day. Any renault garage will try and take you for a f**king ride where as your more likley to get a better deal elsewhere. When i spoke to arnold clark about doing the belts on my car they quoted me £800 needed the car for 3 days...

I got put in touch with a lad that worked for renault for 7 years he done the Cam,Aux belt and tensioners and a service for £550, my cars a 2001 phase one 172.

Whats the asking price for the car? The fact the belts havent been done could be a major haggling wedge ;-)

The chap is unsure weather the cam belt was done. He has had it a year and it was serviced by the garage when he bought it. Its 3 owners (1 demo, 2 keepers inc him). Fully stamped booked. very clean and tidy. He is asking £5250ono.

Is there any way of checking if the belt has been done?

Mmmmm thats a tough one, i couldnt answer that.

On that note i wouldnt be tempted to hand over any more than £4700 if he doesnt know if its been done its basically the most important thing that a car needs regarding engine maintanence!

If you are looking to see if the belt has been done, check the cam blanking plugs, the have to be removed and you can pick them out it may be a good sign!!? maybe not but an idea I put a hole in mine when i did the belt myself but gasket sealer does the trick

Yea i know i should replace them but the were not in the genuine kit!! So i couldnt and had to improvise,i thought this was common if the belt has been done by the owner!! Just thinkin aloud
