172 cat (catalytic converter) is knackered !

My old mans cat is knackered on his 172 (mk2) the car sounds awful at the min :dapprove:

I gave him a few numbers to call up for one, so far he has tried clio spares & spoecialist renault breakers, where else can he try ??

I've got an ad in the wanted section, but getting one is quite hard:(

He tried sh*t fit & they wanted around £700 including the exhaust (that's a bit knackered too) Renault wanted over a grand for the cat alone:(

Try Citren in Norwich. There is also a 172 cat on eBay at the mo for £40 with both lambda sensors.

erm. can't think of anyone else. What's wrong with the exhaust? get someone just to weld the f*cker up? And the cat....has it failed an MOT on emissions? or has the cat just got a hole? Weld that up too depending on where it is?

The exhaust has already been repaired (welded up) twice, the back box has pretty much had it now.

The cat rattles, so I guess that the inside of it's loose ??
Will he need both Lambda sensors ?

steady now.
The CAT rattles. You sure this isnt exactly the same rattle that all 172 standard exhausts make? if so, it's definitely NOT the cat. I've got a 182 manifold and a decat pipe and it still rattles. It's the central silencer that does it. Winds me up a treat.

No point in ever replacing the rear lambda sensor iirc, a new front (upstream) one will normally improve MPG fairly significantly and stop any hesitant throttle response from cold. you can get a bosch item for around £50

I don't know too much about it really, he says he took it to renault and they came back & said that it's the cat. I have no idea at all tbh it does sound really bad when you start the car up from cold, the noise is pretty bad.

Alarm bells should be ringing Craig, they want his money, most probably the baffles have gone in the mid section/backbox. Get him to replace the exhaust 1st then see if the problem is still there.

^ no worries. He's not into de-cat stuff etc as he's old lol.

I know mate I know ! He thinks they are gods though !
Hopefully sorting the exhaust which i'll tell him to get fitted first.
