172 cup gearbox

I think the ratio's are different to the ph1, but the speedo sensor gubbins are the same.

  Lionel Richie
phs1 has the same ratios as the williams off the top of my head

phs1 is JC5 089
willy is JC5 048
172 is JC5 129
late 172/182 is JC5 130

(all of the top of my head, so i might be wrong there)

  Lionel Richie
130 has no speedo output from memory

129 has the speedo drive

i think anyway, its been a while since i've dabbled in them

  Lots of Alfas
If you put a 172ph1 gearbox in a cup it will be slightly slower accelerating (not much though) due to the longer ratios. Not sure what the differences are with the 129 and 130s. From memory Renault strengthened some guide pin or something somewhere in the later boxes??

My cup has a JC5 , number 129 box. When the box is showing weaknesses (i'm starting to get the idea the box wo'nt take much more for long) ,i'm really thinking about a phase 1 gearbox , due to the longer gear ratios.

This because i've done some weightsaving on the cup and it's quite quick so the first gear is just way too short + aggresive , i trie to "skip" the power unleashed in first and do more with the second gear

Speedo works the same as a phase one box does'nt it ? So if i trie to look for a nice recon phase 1 box, will it be a straight fit ? Or are there also different drive-shafts etc. ?

Franx, The 172 Cup uses a JC5 130 from factory. Has your's been replaced with the 129?
The 130 is the strongest box, hence it is also used in the 182, cup and Trophy.

the phase 1 box wont fit the phase 2 ive fitted 2 boxes in my car in 5 yrs, the first replacement was from a normal phase 2 172 and the speedo input/ sensor didnt fit in the box. i believe the phase 2 used there speedo's from the abs, all gears are longer in the phase 1 as i have proven this against phase 2 172/182's and out run them. so if you have a phase 2 clio dont try fitting a phase 1 box it will bolt straight on but your have no speedo.

The 172 cup doesn't have ABS hence it has the speedo output. I'm pretty sure it's a JC5 129 with lower ratios than a 172 ph1.

^^ nice one , this i wanted to hear. I'm going to start looking for a Phase 1 box for very cheap if possible and get it reconned. For future purposes. Just went out on an evening thrash and the box is coping but it's not going to last very long anymore i think. Especially when driving with two persons (more weight) and hitting maximum torque on cams , you can hear the box sort of working/squeeling from stress

Can i use my brand new clutch when changing boxes ? Just had it done ...

  RS RIP
^^ yep , mine really has the 129. I have a readout from Renault using my VIN numbers, along with the service history these specs came out . JC5 , 129

Harry are you saying i have an old type gearbox ? The less stronger one ?

  Ph1
This gearbox weakness lark is the biggest myth going imo

Theres a charged ph1 running 300+ and no probs. Countless turbo'd and TB'd ones pumping mid to late 200's again without probs. Its how its looked after and driven thats key imo

Andy i hope you're right. I have just been reading a lot of negative thing about the RS gearboxes, BUT i do really watch gearchanges, easy on first gear , easy on clutch etc. etc. , just time the right moments to let her go .

It just seems that since the cams came in and i'm making pretty much around the 200 mark that the box is making different noises on full torque than before. Worries me ..

That would have to be shipped over , not a good thing. Will come out too expensive but thanks

+1 on the gearbox myth. my car does santa pod and trackdays mainly. It doesn't get driven gently, however i can change gear properly and 18 months on, 180 ftlbs / 240 bhp ish it's still absolutly fine. ( and now on 77k miles)

and the cup has a 129 g/b ( proper cup that is ;))

Good to get some piece of mind here.. thought the next $$$ spending was around the corner for f**ks sake, budget has gone down the drain .

In my line of work (i'm a docker ; containercrane operator) the credit crunch has taken its tole, work has been cut by 30% .. so have my wages/earnings. No money for the Cup, ofcourse some left for neccescary jobs ;)

your mods won't be causing a noisy gearbox you've only added approx 20 ftlbs of power, if your gearbox is noisy, it's for other reasons

Iv read them too but if you flip the coin theres equally as many running way way above stock power without probs, loads running over 100k on the clock and half the forum thrash the nuts off them every sunday on a track day again without probs.

Im not saying its the strongest box but theres a difference between this tag of ''weak box'' and one thats had its life shortened by excessive abuse. Any cars box can let go if you abuse it enough.

Read many posts on here from lads who have had to replace there boxes at well under 50k. Something far wrong with that like

So looking another way around is there any gearbox I could fit to my 172 ph1 to make it even quicker ?? From what I read JC5 130 would fit but I would have to give up ABS ? what about better box with ABS ?

You should be able to fit my jc5 129 (172 cup spec) because of the same speedometer setup ? do'nt know about the ABS

ABS... do you really need it !? naah

  172 cup & 182
I have two Gearboxes striped at the moment as I am going to make a hybrid box out of them and fit a Quaife diff, one From a 2000 ph1 172 and one from a 2003 182, the gear ratios are the same ! it's the Diff that's a different ratio
ph1 172 has a 15,59 the 182 a 15,61, I want the diff ratio from the 182 and the speedo output from the 172,
this will go in my 172 CUP.

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!

thats cos most people on Cs are full of s**t and dont really know what they are on about.

which is why i bought the wrong gearbox.

^^ :D yeah well you should have double checked yourself before making the move based on CS opinions..

sorry you go the wrong box though

ph-1 has 15/58 not 59. and yes jc5-089 and jc5-129 are fully interchangeable.

Frank, I want just opposite as you. I am going from 089 to 129 :) If your gearbox is crunching I recommend you a recon. JC-5 is pretty weak and needs to be behaved well but not that weak so it can handle easily 200 BHP.
