172 Cup owners with 4 Pots

Just wondering if you get any more 'lock-ups' with the extra braking force and lack of abs? Do you need to change anything else apart from the caliper/carrier? Is there any more pedal travel than with standard calipers

I'm planning on upgrading mine in the near future so would love to know the pro's and con's.

The reason for better stopping power is I plan on unleashing the renaults power and want some safety to go with it...

Hi mate,

I went from basic standard brakes to Jam Sports Wilwood setup. 295mm disks and ferodo DS2500 pads. Although my car had standard brakes before so I cant really tell the difference between a 'good' standard set up and 4 -pots. But I love them, did two track days this year and once there warm they truly do stop the car! I had a bit of an issue with brake fade on the first track day, then I removed the arch liners, fog lamps and carbon cannister etc and it was gone on the second track day.

I stopped yday morning when a pheasant crossed the road from 70mph instantly, no skidding etc. The old setup would of skidded. Pedal feel is 100% better. I'm sure a lot of people will come along and say you dont need them, but my standard ones had covered 70,000 miles including the same disk! So they were due for an upgrade, for a few hundred more £ I got the 4-pots.

If I had the choice of buying them again I would. Also they just about fit on 2118's....

Hope this helps

Bizarrely Chris 4-pots will lock up less

Because of the increase in surface area and bigger pistons they are more progressive so you can push them further before locking the wheels up :)

Ive got 4 pot willwoods on mine with Split discs, the Jam sport kit. Im impressed, but the ABS seems to kick in more, but this could be because the pedal is loads harder now ive swopped out the brake fluid and a full overhaul all round, on 2500's. Also they are about 1/2 the weight of the old setup.

With my willwoods on and my ABS being fudged a couple of months ago they only locked up on me a couple of times. Once was coming up to a hairpin bend and the other was on some lose gravel on the side of a road. Both times i poo'd

Great info guys, cheers

Has everyone upgraded their brake lines to braided items?

Also does the 4 pots require a better master cylinder? I only ask as I know 106's etc require them to be changed to feel the benefit of a big brake upgrade

Depends on weather the calipers you are buying have pistons suited to the standard MC or if they are suited to be run with a bias pedal box. My Hi-specs were deisgned for the latter so i upgraded to a 23.8mm master cylinder from a Clio 200 which reduced the pedal travel as i cba messing around with bias pedal box's.

Yeh ive also got braided lines all round, and it came with them on the front. Rears are over kill really, but ive also got 2500's on the back and standard none drill discs
