172 Cup - rattling sound from engine area

  was 172 Cup now 197
Hi Everyone,

I fairly new here, so hello to you all, great site by the way. :D

I bought a 172 cup about 1 month ago. Really like it, internally it rattles away merrily to itself but I new that before I got it thanks to reading a few posts on here. Anyway internal rattles don't bother me, but I have noticed that when the car is stationery and I have the window open there is quite a lot of tinny rattling coming for the engine area that changes as I rev it. when it moving and I plant my foot the engine sounds great there is a very basey roar which eclipses any other noise. I'm not very knowledgeable about the mechanics of cars, but it almost sounds lke it could be coming from the either the engine or the exhuast where it meets the engine. Is this normal?? It could be something and it could be nothing so I thought I'd post and see if anyone knows as I don't know anyone else with a 172 cup.

Have you checked your oil level?
If its a 'tapping' noise it could be a gasket on the exhaust thats blowing.
I've been told that a light 'tapping' on idle is the injectors....not sure why though!

I had this with my CUP, although.. may not be for the same reason...

Behind the battery there's a black metal bar (I think it's where the relays are kept) which is bolted to the passenger side suspension turret.. On mine, this bar had snapped.. which caused the rattle and a knocking noise when driving and at idle.. Apparently this is common in 172 / Cups. according to Renault Tunbridge Wells...?? they strengthned it all up.. so now it;s fine..:)

Thats the ECU mate...the bracket on them is a bit flimsy :)

sure its not the centre section on the exhaust? if you have the original reno unit, the middle box baffles are prone to collapsing

Cheers everyone, thanks for the advice. I have checked the oil and that bracket where the ECU is and its fine, I reckon it is probably something to do with the exhaust. I'm going to get it checked out next weekend by a local garage that i trust so will let you know what they say.
