172 cup - speedo sensor

  Silver 172 cup
Hi,
This has been a problem on and off for well over a year now. The speedo sensor on my 172 cup will decide suddenly to stop working and then randomly start working again. I have read it could be a faulty speedo sensor. How do I access this to check it is in tact? I think I read somewhere it was on the gearbox but unsure of how to access.

Cheers,

Luke

i had that problem on my mk 2 when i first got it, yeah it is by the gearbox, easier to get to from underneath the car jacked up. its only like 15 quid to get one online, but try contact spray on it first to clean it up, that worked for a bit for me but mine was fucked when i replaced it. apparently its a common fault with clios though

If the speedo sensor is in the same location as the phase 1 then i changed it from above by reaching down past the exhaust manifold. Unclip the sensor connector, pull the sensor out, fit new.... 5 minute job

yeah my mate helped me out on it, im not the most mechanical sort of person, i know a few bits, but he got to it through the top down past the air filter. but its was a quick easy job

As everyone else has said, it's down the back of the engine on top of the gearbox. It should have a heatshield around it. Very tricky to get it off but I definitely wouldn't say getting at it underneath is easier!

If it's behaving as you say it is then it needs replacing, should be about £20 - I had this happen a couple of years ago.

Seen quite a few on ebay- is this a good place to buy one from? They list these as being compatible for clio 172- sume the sensor on the cup is the same as that on non-cup 172?

I think they're the same. I got mine from RRG trade parts in the midlands, I think they are in the trader section here. Perfect time to become a member...
